What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are the gaps created by one or more missing teeth. This dental procedure involves placing two or more specially fitted crowns on either side of the missing tooth or teeth and serving as anchors or ‘abutments.’ Sandwiched between the crowns is a false tooth or teeth, called ‘pontics,’ to complete the bridge.

The common types of dental bridges are:

  • Traditional Dental Bridges. Traditional dental bridges are the most popular type of bridge. They consist of one or multiple false teeth (pontics) held in place by abutments (supporting teeth or implants).
  • Implant-Supported Bridges. They are used when you have more than one tooth missing. Instead of being supported by crowns or frameworks, these bridges are supported by dental implants.

What Benefits Do Dental Bridges Offer?

Prevents Teeth Shifting. Teeth around a missing tooth may shift towards the gap over time, leading to a misaligned bite. Dental bridges fill the gaps, ensuring your remaining teeth stay in their correct position, preventing potential bites and dental problems.

Maintain Facial Shape. The facial shape can change due to missing teeth, often leading to a sunken appearance. Dental bridges help maintain your natural facial shape by providing support to the lips and cheeks.

Durable and Long-Lasting. Dental bridges are built to last for many years. Made from robust materials like porcelain-fused-to-metal, they are durable and can withstand everyday use.

Lower Your Risk of Developing Periodontal Disease and Tooth Decay. Gaps in your teeth can trap food particles, providing a breeding ground for bacteria. By filling these gaps, dental bridges reduce the places where food can become stuck.

Our Dental Bridge Procedure

The dental bridge procedure typically requires at least two visits to our office.

Step 1. Initial Consultation

During the initial consultation, we will evaluate your dental health and discuss the best options for you. We will then prepare the supporting teeth by reshaping or rebuilding them to support the bridge.

Step 2: Taking Dental Impressions

We will take an impression of your teeth, which will be used to create your custom bridge. This helps create a precise model for the dental bridge.

Step 3: Temporary Dental Bridge Placement

To protect the prepared teeth and ensure your comfort, a temporary bridge will be put into place while your permanent dental bridge is being crafted.

Step 4: Dental Bridge Installation

On your second visit, we will fit the dental bridge onto your anchor teeth. The bridge is securely and carefully cemented to ensure perfect placement and comfortable fit.

We understand dental visits may be stressful. So, we prioritize ensuring that any discomfort is comfortably managed, especially during bridge placement. Rest assured, we use anesthesia for traditional bridges and provide advice for post-procedure care for swift recovery.
